This modernist square umbrella stand made of powder-coated white metal is a rare design classic, created by the famous josef hoffmann for bieffeplast. A square basket, with hundreds of small square holes, hangs from a white frame. At the base is a rich purple metal stand. This piece offers an original solution for storing umbrellas, and is a must for any design-conscious home. Born in the czech republic in 1870, josef hoffmann, despite his training as an architect, has had a great influence on the field of design. With his wiener werkstätte he pioneered a new way of designing: simple, clean geometric lines. His love of small squares even earned hoffmann the nickname quadratl hoffmann, or "square hoffmann". He would go on to influence such greats as le corbusier, alvar aalto and gio ponti. The italian design company bieffeplast obtained the rights to reproduce his work in the 1970s, and this particular piece is one of them.
