Antique Windsor Dining Chair
Over a hundred years old and still as sturdy as the day it was made. This English Windsor chair dates from around 1900 and comes from the tradition of country chairmakers, with a seat cut from a single plank of elm and a hoop of steam-bent ash. At the back, the seat extends into a tailpiece from which two bracing spindles rise and cross the back. A structural detail that gives the chair its strength, and a beauitrhythm of lines. The hand-saddled seat shows a deep, rippling grain. The initials A.H are stamped into the tailpiece, and underneath sits a crowned stamp with the letters MP. Marks of a long working life: time has darkened and softened the wood, leaving cracks, old repairs and wear that tell the chair’s story. An object where wabi sabi is not the initial style, but a consequence of time. There's cracks and dents (see photos), but this doesn't affect the overall sturdiness.
