Peruvian archaeological bowl

Archaeological bowl, probably funerary, found in a burial site identified in Peru dating from the 12th century. The pottery of the Chancay culture is famous for its bi-chrome appearance (often dark patterns on a light or cream background) and the use of rigorous geometric motifs. The parallels: The wide outer bands adorned with oblique lines, checkers, or interlocking triangles painted with brown/black slip on terracotta are typical of the Chancay style. This culture frequently decorated its containers and vases (such as the cuchimilcos) with small animal heads modelled in relief or stylised human faces with almond-shaped eyes.
