This small Napoleon III writing desk, crafted from solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, demonstrates the careful craftsmanship typical of the 19th century. It opens with two drawers adorned with delicate moldings and simple knobs. At mid-height, an ogee-shaped flap unfolds to form a writing chest, revealing an interior lined with bird's-eye maple veneer, illuminating the contrast with the mahogany. Two interior drawers hold pens and stationery. Elegant leather covers the writing desk top, enhanced with fleurons in each corner and surrounded by three decorative friezes. An ingenious mechanism prevents the upper drawers from opening if the flap remains closed, ensuring internal security. Beneath the flap, a large compartmentalized drawer optimizes storage. The whole rests on four curved, carved legs, and the interiors of the drawers are made of durable oak. Despite some missing moldings, this piece retains its charm and authenticity.
