Art Nouveau gondola armchair – Carved wood & red theatre velvet – France

Art Nouveau bergère, made in France in the early 20th century, crafted from turned wood stained in a golden brown hue with an antique patina. The backrest features a gendarme hat silhouette, with a crest sculpted with volutes, shells, and floral motifs characteristic of the style. The armrest supports are adorned with fluting and sculpted capitals; the apron is enhanced with garlands and finely chiselled neoclassical ornaments. The entire upholstery is made of fine striped theatre red velvet, secured with black upholstery nails around the perimeter of the seat, armrests, and backrest. The velvet shows visible wear: marks and slight discolouration in places, reflecting the age of the piece. The wood is entirely original with a natural patina, with no recent intervention noted.
