Iconic Capitello lounge chair, designed by the Studio 65 collective in 1971 for Gufram Italy. This chair is from a limited edition (165/500) manufactured in 1986. The chair is never used, the original carton box is still with it. Also the original Gufram papers are included. Studio 65 was founded in 1965 in Turin as an avant garde experimental collective of architects, designers, artists and poets. The studio played an essential role in the Radical Design Movement in Italy 1960s/70s. The Capitello chair subverts a traditional icon of classical high culture, the Greek ionic capital and column, and replaces it with a Pop-inspired icon for a new generation skeptical of the establishment. Hard, noble marble is substituted by cushy, cheap, self-skinning polyurethane foam. The load-bearing structural pillar of government and financial institutions is brought down from its lofty heights in the form of a lounge chair that delights and surprises with its irreverent humor and biting sociopolitical critique. This icon of radical design is featured in prestigious museums worldwide, such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum. The chair is made of soft polyurethane and hand-finished with Guflac Ultra, allowing it to be used indoors or out, and resembling the, marble after which it was modeled. The chair is in excellent condition, as new.
