Rare set of four sculptural space-age chairs from the "Starlook Ultralight" range by Pierre Guariche for Meurop, a Belgian furniture company: one Luna armchair and three Polaris chairs. Guariche designed the range between 1965 and 1967, consisting of four models: Polaris, Luna, Mars, and Jupiter. Chairs in black faux leather on metal legs, covered with a black plastic shell. They rest on round black tulip feet. The shapes resemble a wine glass or a capsule, illustrating the optimism of the moon landing years. All are swivel chairs. These are the original versions with round tulip bases. In 1969, the range received chrome bases with crossed legs and was renamed Paris, Tours, Nice, and Menton. These later versions are often confused with these. The Luna model is the widest, with a rounded bathtub shape and enveloping armrests. The three Polaris are straighter, with a pointed backrest and a round removable seat cushion. Together, they form a striking dining set or a decorative group in a living room, bar, or office. Good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with the period. The bases show slight scratches but no cracks. The four chairs are structurally sound and stable. Completely original, only the tops of the seat cushions have been renewed. See photos for more details.
