French Brutalist Wooden Tripod Stool in Solid Oak, 1950s

A vintage French tripod stool in solid oak, produced in France around the 1950s. With its low proportions, softly triangular seat, three rounded legs and deep brown patina, this sculptural wooden stool combines French rustic furniture traditions with the primitive simplicity now associated with mid-century Brutalist interiors.  Origin: France. A thick, softly triangular seat with rounded edges rests directly on three substantial turned legs, each gently swelling through the centre before narrowing towards the seat. The dark finish emphasises the natural grain and long-established patina, with lighter rubbed areas revealing the form and texture beneath. Its asymmetrical seat and rounded tripod construction give the piece a particularly expressive presence despite its modest scale. Low three-legged stools have a long history within European rural furniture, where the tripod construction offered natural stability on uneven floors. French mid-century examples were often made in solid local hardwood and today sit between vernacular furniture, folk art and the more sculptural language associated with post-war Brutalist design. Condition. Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The wood shows a rich aged patina with surface wear, rubbing, small marks and colour variation throughout, particularly along the edges and seat.
