Robert mathieu is above all one of the most renowned french lighting designers of the 1950s. Trained from the beginning at the boulle school, he began his career in watchmaking before launching into lighting design in 1949. The the finesse of its execution and its clean lines have earned it a prestigious private clientele, including large hotels. Beyond lighting, mathieu occasionally explores the design of coffee tables. Playfully incorporating perforated metal, a technique present in some of its aluminum reflectors, it demonstrates a keen eye for detail. This rare coffee table is made up of a black lacquered tubular structure which ingeniously integrates a magazine rack in bright yellow perforated metal, and which accommodates a trapezoidal glass top cast on a bed of sand, held by gilded brass cabochons. Edition: robert mathieu, circa 1950 good general condition, repainted magazine rack.
