A charming pair of antique French faience plates, dating from the 19th century, with a delicate hand-painted floral motif in blue, green and red, framed by fine concentric lines and an ochre-gold border. The plates have a softly scalloped and finely fluted edge, giving them a particularly elegant and decorative appearance. The simple, stylized floral design and the warm ochre-gold detailing are characteristic of the traditional French faience aesthetic. Possible attribution to Nevers — this attribution is not certain, as the plates are unmarked. Their form, palette and hand-painted decoration are consistent with French faience from the Nevers tradition, but I prefer to leave the attribution as a possibility rather than present it as definitive. Each plate measures approximately 23 cm (9 in) in diameter. Both plates show small irregularities in the glaze, including tiny glaze bubbles and firing imperfections, characteristic of the manufacturing process and adding to their authentic antique character. Condition: Good antique condition overall, with normal signs of age. One of the plates has a small chip to the edge, clearly visible in the photographs. There are also minor glaze irregularities and small firing imperfections. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. A lovely pair for a collection of French antique faience, or for display as decorative plates.
