He was one of the central figures in the field of modern architecture and design in the 20th century. Marcel Breuer began his career in 1920 at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he undertook an apprenticeship in carpentry before later being appointed director of the furniture workshop. Inspired by the Dutch De Stijl movement and Soviet constructivism, Breuer began designing innovative furniture using tubular steel. His creations include, among others, the B32 cantilever chair and the B3 club chair ("Wassily"), a radical avant-garde piece created in 1925. Due to his Jewish origins, Marcel Breuer left Germany after Hitler came to power in 1933. After stays in Budapest and London, he emigrated to the United States in 1937. In the United States, he co-founded the architecture department at Harvard University alongside Walter Gropius. From 1946 onwards, Marcel Breuer worked exclusively as an independent architect. In the following years, he produced an impressive body of work, consisting of revolutionary architectural structures. Among these is the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Marcel Breuer passed away in 1981 in New York.
