Pair of straw-seated chairs by Georges Robert, France, circa 1950, brutalist, vintage, design. Pair of dining chairs, France, 1950s, attributed to Georges Robert. Georges Robert is associated with rustic post-war French furniture, featuring solid stained wood and straw seats, straddling the line between provincial and chalet furniture — a style that has become highly sought after for its almost brutalist character. Dark brown stained hardwood, deep and warm patina, with the wood grain showing through the stain. Single-piece back uprights, carved into large cylinders topped with a slight dome, front legs of the same section, rounded at the foot. Backrest with three regularly spaced curved slats. Low H-stretcher, wedged joints, corner blocks added under the apron: a straightforward and solid carpenter's construction. Hand-woven straw seats, rush woven in four quarters radiating towards the central star, in a beautiful honey tone that contrasts with the brown of the frames. The weaving is tight, even, and still firm to the touch. Originally intended for dining service, they find their place around a farmhouse table, an oak top, or a kitchen table; also very suitable as a pair of accent chairs, on either side of a console, in an entrance, a bedroom, or an office. Stylish enough to be used separately. Very good condition. Patina of use on the frames, superficial scratches, a few strands of rush broken at the central intersection, only visible when turning the chair over and without affecting the integrity of the weaving.
