Beautiful box with lid in handmade ceramic in raku style (a technique of japanese origin characterized by visible cracks on the enamel, often accompanied by bright colors. We would rather be in the presence here of a western raku style (or modern raku), popularized in the 20th century in europe and the united states, often more colorful and expressive, as for this turquoise box. Cracks clearly visible in the enamel (network of fine cracks). Strong contrasts between shiny enamel and smoky or matte areas. Bright turquoise color. Very organic and spontaneous appearance, almost "primitive". Box bearing the same incised signature "mde", ceramist/artisan unidentified. No indication either for the provenance and the period. Good condition. Diameter: 14 cms, depth of the box approximately 6 cms, height 10 cms quite heavy: 1.2 kgs.
