Antique Banker’s Rent Table with Sliding Top, 18th Century

A beautiful antique banker’s or rent table, probably dating from the 18th century. The large solid top slides sideways to reveal a deep storage compartment underneath. Below is another large divided drawer. The upper compartment could be locked, making the table suitable for keeping money, documents and other valuables safely stored away. Probably with walnut top, the table has a strong yet surprisingly simple appearance. The curved legs, low stretcher frame and small geometric details give it plenty of character without feeling overly decorative. The wood has developed a wonderful deep colour and patina over time. There are traces of use and old wormholes, all part of the table’s long history. The woodworm is no longer active. An unusual piece of old European furniture, practical in origin and quite sculptural today.
