Very old and magnificent color lithograph of butterflies - illustration of heterocera (heterocera in latin), including the populi, of the suborder sphinges - this plate is an original from 1887. It is not a copy but a engraving over 130 years old! - size: 28 X 21 cm - a detailed and realistic work from a specialized book; with around fifty different species illustrated - the condition of the engraving is very good: edges just a little worn and a small stain on the right side. Once framed, it will no longer be visible and will give a beautiful vintage effect. - discount for the purchase of several boards: contact me the size is ideal for framing. It fits perfectly in a standard frame. The paper used is high quality, cream colored. Often colored manually, the colors are vibrant, sharp and well contrasted: remarkable work. Please note, the back is without text or image. The author of the work is dr. E. Hofmann, a famous entomologist (1837 - 1892) specializing in insects, particularly lepidoptera (lepidoptera). His entomology collections, butterfly are held at the natural history museum in london and by the national museum of natural history in washington. Rhopalocera (or “moths” in the common sense) are an ancient suborder of lepidoptera. It is opposed to heterocera (heterocera, or “moths”).
