France, rouen - xviiith century. From the sixteenth century, the earthenware of rouen acquires an international reputation and becomes the favorite decoration of a nobility sensitive to the new italian art of living. Rouen, which was at the time the second city of france, was indeed one of the first french industrialists. It spread its forms and patterns throughout europe for nearly three centuries, before beginning a period of decline. As with other french manufactures, the aesthetics of rouen earthenware are subject to european and asian stylistic influences.
