Pair of oak panels carved in high relief of Jesus and Mary (unfinished)

Period: ca. Early – mid 20th century this is a moving and expressive pair of high relief wooden sculptures depicting jesus on the cross and a wailing maria. The jesus panel is finished and signed (m. Decostere) while the maria panel was unfinished by the artist and chisel marks and areas of wood filler can still be seen; personally, I find that it has its charm and I therefore chose not to varnish it or modify it. The panels are made of thick oak. The jesus panel is slightly larger than the other. Condition: the jesus sign is in good condition. The maria panel was never finished by the sculptor and the photos illustrate the condition. Dimensions: 45.5 cm high, 32 cm wide, 3.3 cm deep, 2.9 kg.
