Antique Charles X style 'Gondola' type sofa to be restored, 19th century

Antique Charles X style sofa, 19th century. Seat h: 42cm. Stable structure, to be restored. Characteristics of the Charles X style: 1. Simplicity and elegance: The lines are generally simpler and cleaner compared to earlier styles. The emphasis is on functionality and aesthetics without excess ornamentation. 2. Materials and finishes: Use of woods such as maple, ash, lemon and cherry. Inlays of precious woods, often in contrasts, and fine marquetry. French polish for a shiny and smooth finish. 3. Patterns and decorations: The patterns are often inspired by nature, with representations of flowers, foliage and fruits. Marquetry and inlays of mother-of-pearl and metals were common. 4. Typical furniture: Light chairs with carved backs and curved legs. Frequent use of the gondola shape for seats. The Charles X style is therefore a mixture of continuity with the past and simplification, offering a transition towards the Louis-Philippe style which will follow.
