Magnificent set of 4 cantilever chairs by Gastone Rinaldi for Rima. Padua, Italy, 1970s. Tubular structure in chrome metal. Minimalist design, Italian modernism. Very rare original woven textile, with a check pattern. Brown and beige colours. Entirely original and in excellent condition. The chrome is shiny and the textile is in excellent preservation. In 1916, his father Mario established RIMA, a company for the production of metal furniture. Gastone enrolled in the Faculty of Economics, but he was passionate about sports and design (as a footballer, he even played for the Cremona team, which was very strong at the time, and as a racing driver, he participated in the legendary Mille Miglia race). In 1948, he took over the management of the family business with his brother Giorgio. He met Gio Ponti, and in 1950 he created the chairs (DU10 and DU11) for the Hospital section of the IX Triennale in Milan. The DU9 chair was also presented at the same Triennale. Domus regularly published his creations. In 1952, he attended the XXX Milan Exhibition in the section organised by Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass, and Marco Zanuso. The armchairs for the Piccolo Teatro in Milan followed, with Zanuso. In 1954, he won the Compasso d’Oro for the DU30 chair. He participated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli, and Gardella in the American adventure of Altamira, one of the first companies across the Atlantic to engage Italian designers. He then worked with Carlo Mollino on chairs for the Molinette Hospital in Turin. In 1957, the DU41 armchair won the silver medal at the XI.
