Vintage decorative bowl in polychrome glazed ceramic, made in Brancaleone, Calabria, in southern Italy, probably in the second half of the 20th century. Circular shape with a wide pierced rim that mimics an interwoven wicker structure, in shades of blue, ochre, and brown. Hand-painted central medallion on a blue background, featuring a large white flower, a yellow and brown checkered centre, yellow scrolls, and fine white patterns. Glossy glaze, pronounced relief on the edge, and visible variations in the application of the decoration, characteristic of handcrafted work. Brancaleone is part of a region where decorative ceramics hold an important place in Calabrian material culture, with both utilitarian and ornamental pieces featuring painted decorations and bold colours. The pierced rim that imitates wicker links this bowl to an ancient decorative typology, regularly revisited by Italian workshops in the 20th century. It can be used as a fruit bowl, a catch-all, or a decorative plate; its very graphic decoration also allows it to be displayed alone on a table or a simple piece of furniture.
