Antique pine coffee table, traditional Chinese furniture from Shanxi, dated around 1930. Originating from Shanxi in northern China, from the early 20th century, where local pine was crafted using mortise and tenon joinery without nails, featuring a thick solid top and lobed cut aprons. In domestic interiors of northern China, coffee tables served as auxiliary surfaces next to the kang, an elevated platform used for sitting and resting. Their low height corresponded to the habit of living close to the ground. Constructed from solid pine using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, without nails. The substantial top rests on four square-section legs with lobed cut aprons. The lower H-stretchers reinforce the structure. The carpentry follows the style of northern provincial Chinese furniture.
