A crystal vase in the Art Deco style, made at the famous Moser manufactory in Karlovy Vary in the 1950s, designed by Joseph Hoffmann – one of the most important architects and designers of twentieth-century Central Europe. Made of transparent, faceted crystal in a cool, lemon-amber shade, it features a geometric, regular rhythm of oval indentations arranged vertically over the entire surface of the body. The flattened walls give it a subtle lightness, while the thickened, polished base emphasizes its stability. The form elegantly narrows in the middle, gently widening towards the top, giving the whole an architectural, sculptural expression. The high-gloss finish testifies to the precision of the cutting craft. The Moser signature confirms its authenticity. Condition is very good – facets and details remain sharp, no chips or abrasions, surface free from signs of use. This vase tells the story of post-war modernism in Mitteleuropa: the crystalline coolness of the colour evokes memories of 1950s salons lit by lampshades, and the rhythm of regular indentations pulses with the echo of Hoffmann's architectural utopias. In its form, one can find both intellectual discipline and the release of the bright, joyful energy typical of post-war optimism. Refracting light into small reflections, the crystal seems to tell stories of urban chic and elegance that revived in Central European salons during the reconstruction era. In arrangement, such a vase will work well placed on a low walnut wood table or on a classic modernist console, where the geometric cuts can reflect natural daylight. It can be a single, expressive element against matte surfaces – for example, against light plaster or next to a mid-century poster. Surrounded by Murano glass or minimalist ceramics in contrasting colours, it will emphasize its collector's pedigree. Interiors with a distinct mid-century palette, as well as clean, contemporary spaces, will gain a touch of museum-like, modernist discipline combined with the lightness of light.
