Scandinavian carpet rya in virgin wool with sun patterns 200x156 cm. Handmade. A rya is a traditional swedish carpet made of strands of virgin wool of icelandic sheep with a length of about 2-5 cm. Originally, the rya was a large blanket used by sailors to replaced fur. Over time, carpets have evolved to be lighter and more colorful but are still appreciated for insulating the cold soils of the nordic countries. The ryas consist of a weft knotted with ghiord knots or turkish knots with three threads of wool, which gives the carpet a texture rich in shades of color. The name rya comes from a village in southwestern sweden, but can also refer to the breed of sheep of norwegian origin whose wool is used for the ryas.
