A table grounded in wood, softened in wool. I created this one-off table from a substantial piece of reclaimed solid oak. The tabletop is more than fifty years old, with its distinctly rounded form pointing towards a 1970s origin. After decades of use, the wood now begins a new chapter. Rather than erasing its history, the oak was patiently recovered and carefully reworked by a skilled woodworker. Its natural grain, warmth and character remain visible, preserving the richness that only develops through time and use. For the base, I designed and built an entirely new sculptural form. I upholstered it by hand in a soft beige mélange wool, with a layer of furniture foam underneath. This makes the base unexpectedly tactile: soft to the touch and pleasantly yielding when your legs rest against it while seated at the table. This soft intervention creates a gentle contrast with the weight and solidity of the oak. The result sits somewhere between furniture and object: robust yet soft, functional yet distinctly sculptural. Its generous surface can be used as a dining or work table, while the upholstered base gives it a warm and inviting presence from every angle. This is not a restored vintage table or a serially produced design, but a unique handmade piece in which more than fifty years of material history meet contemporary design, woodworking and upholstery. — Designed and handmade by Roger Haan / Zachte Zaken — Unique one-off piece — Reclaimed solid oak tabletop, over fifty years old — Hand-upholstered sculptural base with furniture foam — Beige mélange wool upholstery — Made in Maastricht, the Netherlands — 2026
