Fabbrica Ferniani Faenza pocket tray 36.5cm majolica shell, gilded, 1800

This is an impressive and decorative example of antique Italian tin-glazed earthenware, or majolica, for which Italy has been renowned since the Renaissance. In this example, an oversized hull was cast from an early 18th century ceramic mold by the famous Ferniani factory. There are blue and white majolica examples from the 17th century with the same molding. In this case, the gold metallic finish and hand-painted "italy" signature (still part visible, as photographed) on the underside suggest that this piece was probably produced in the late 19th century, but could be from an earlier date. Ravanelli guidotti, “the ferniani factory. Faenza ceramics from baroque to eclecticism”, milan 2009. The uniformity of the hand-painted golden glaze is indicative of the quality of ferniani. This white and gold glaze have gently rubbed over time adding depth to the finish and great character. The oversized proportions, sculptural presence and lush finish make this item as relevant to today's interiors as when it was produced 150 years ago. This would work well as a decorative display or fruit bowl, especially in a home near the sea. The form is an oversized rococo-inspired ceramic shell hand-cast using a historic mold. Inside the hinge area has wave-shaped details that curve inwards. From here, naturalistic fluted groves extend to scalloped edges. On the underside there are reverse groves and three protruding feet. This antique item is in good original condition with age adding to the design. The antique patina has been preserved. There is an attractive friction to the glaze and gilding achieved over time. The structure is sound, with no major cracks or chips. There are some small nibbles like areas of exposed earthenware adding texture and historical intrigue.
