The Karnak religious complex — called the Karnak Temple, or simply Karnak — comprises a large collection of ruins of temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings located north of Thebes, now the city of Luxor, Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile. The Karnak complex, rebuilt and developed over more than 2,000 years by successive pharaohs, from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic era. It is the largest religious complex in all of antiquity. It was dedicated to the Theban triad with the god Amun-Re at its head. The complex was connected to the Luxor Temple by the Alley of the Sphinxes.
