Fragement of agra carpets, circa 1880. The indian city of agra, home to the infamous taj mahal, has an important and remarkable tradition of carpet weaving. Agra was a major production center for the best classic mughal carpets. The city was also one of the three major carpet production centers in india. Although the weaving industry was limited in this region, its workshops produced elegant antique carpets that were praised for their great originality and quality of workmanship. Agra's semi-antique and antique carpets are highly sought after and are among the finest indian decorative rugs. Agra carpets made in the early twentieth century were generally more commercial in nature rather than presenting the superb quality of their ancestral counterparts. Carpets produced in the nineteenth century are universally appreciated by interior decorators and collectors. In addition, agra rugs are distinct and highly appreciated works of art whose delicate color palette and whimsical designs are quite unique among antique decorative rugs. Overall, most of agra's nineteenth-century productions will also be considered superb artistic investments. Dimensions: 303x138 cm. Condition: strong wear, edges redone, lower part stitched, it is a fragement.
