Charming pair of antique candle holders in silver metal depicting women in phrygian caps richly decorated. Circular tripod base forming rosettes and surmounted by friezes of flowers pushed back. The 2 rooms have a pretty hand-painted decoration of green color on the top of the base and on the bobèche. Quality cast iron with a nice carving on the detail of the two women wearing the phrygian cap. Note that the screw of a bobèche has been restored and carefully held by a bolt. "the first allegory of the republic in the guise of a woman wearing a phrygian cap dates back to the french revolution: this cap worn by freed slaves in greece and rome, appreciated by sailors and galley men of the mediterranean, is proudly taken up by revolutionaries from the south as an emblem of freedom. Marianne being one of the most widespread names of the eighteenth century, it is used to personify the people, and sometimes the republic, especially in the mouths of its detractors. Under the third republic, statues and especially busts of marianne multiplied." Size of a room: Height of 16 cm. Total width of 8 cm. Depth and diameter of the base of 6.6 cm. Weight of the 2 candlesticks of 267 grams.
