The Artona line by the Scarpa duo was the first line ever produced by Maxalto, the specialist division of B&B Italia. Maxalto was originally set up in 1975 as a high-end division of B&B Italia to focus exclusively on the production of artisanal, mostly wood furniture. The Artona was their first project and also functions as a counter-message against the common prevailing use of plastics in furniture design during the postwar period. This writing desk was designed as a complementary addition to the Artona collection in 1979; it combines the characteristic treatment of the briar wood tables, edging in solid striped walnut and the use of a high quality leather covering for the work surface. The cognac leather of this piece is patinated and shows signs of age and wear, which adds depth and warmth to the piece. Condition: Wood shows normal scratches and wear for an original desk from the 1970s. The leather on the top has some staining/discolouring as expected from a vintage desk. The leather panel under the table top is in good condition with normal age-related wear. Original handles have been changed. Made in Italy, 1970s.
