Pair of vintage Tolix model A chairs, designed by Xavier Pauchard.

Very beautiful pair featuring several characteristics of the early productions of model A, first generation production circa 1935-1938: Fully metallic structure, made of stamped steel sheet and assembled by welding. Large continuous rounded tube forming the top of the backrest and the armrests, characteristic of the early versions of chair A. Smooth sheet metal backrest, without the U-shaped pressed reinforcement found in later productions. Very slender legs made of folded sheet metal, without horizontal crossbars between the legs. Discreet lateral fixings of the backrest on the tubular structure. Seat featuring 7 perforations, layout corresponding to older productions. Reinforcement under the seat made of welded X-crosses, an old construction particularly interesting for dating. Weight of approximately 4.7 kg per chair, consistent with this steel construction. Dimensions recorded: seat approximately 35–36 cm wide × 35 cm deep and total height of about 84 cm. Patina and traces of old layers of paint, with wear revealing the metal and/or previous layers. The chairs have been repainted during their lifetime and show signs of use, wear, and patina visible in the photos. They do not have a visible stamp. Elements allowing to situate their manufacture: old construction in stamped and welded steel sheet, smooth backrest without U-shaped pressed reinforcement, large rounded tube forming the backrest and armrests, very slender legs made of folded sheet metal without crossbars, seat with 7 perforations and welded X reinforcement underneath. This set of characteristics corresponds to the first generations of the famous Tolix chair A, designed by Xavier Pauchard and marketed from 1935. A dating around the second half of the 1930s / 1940s is therefore considered. A request for dating/authentication is currently underway. Sold only in pairs.
