She was married from 1944 to 1970, to the writer josé saramago. Her artistic path began at the antónio arroio school of decorative arts, and she then studied engraving and serigraphy at gravura (sociedade cooperativa de gravadores portugueses) alongside júlio pomar, alice jorge, manuela pinheiro, emilia nadal and sérgio pombo.
