Reproduced by permission of London Opinion. Printed by the victoria house printing co, ltd tudor street, london ec Reproduced from an original poster, helped by the imperial war museum, by gavin martin ltd. The slogan is cleverly constructed like a rebus, in which the subject of the sentence is an image rather than a word. The man depicted is in fact Horatio Kitchener (Lord Kitchener), the British Minister of War, so the sentence should be read this way: “British people, Lord Kitchener wants you. Join your country's army! God save the king” (British, Lord Kitchener wants you. Join your country's army. God save the king). The effectiveness of this poster was such that it was relaunched in 1917 by James Montgomery Flagg, author of the famous American army call to arms poster depicting Uncle Sam. This poster was reprinted during the Second World War worldwide, becoming one of the most popular posters in the history of advertising.
