A fine antique entomological print with wasps and other Hymenoptera of Madagascar, including Ammophila erythrocephala and Bembex madecassa. The insects are depicted with great precision, with details of wings and legs, and are partly coloured by hand. ‘Madagascar’ at upper left, the Latin names below the image, signed ‘Lebrun sc.’ at lower right and printed by Imp. Geny-Gros, Paris. The plate probably comes from Alfred Grandidier’s great French standard work on the natural history of Madagascar, late 19th century. Scientific insect plates are timelessly decorative. The neat arrangement and the subtle pink tones in the wings make this plate particularly elegant. Beautiful in a cabinet of curiosities, library or modern classic interior; lovely as a series with other natural history prints. Good condition: The paper is lightly toned with a lighter border outside the plate mark; the upper left edge has a small irregularity. No stains or tears in the image.
