Hand face in bronze said of charles V in chiseled bronze. It was made for the crozatier competition during the 2nd half of the nineteenth century. Charles crozatier (1795-1855) was a sculptor, founder, chiseler who instituted a prize in his name to promote his profession through a competition. The winner is awarded a scholarship to complete his training. This renaissance-style hand face is adorned with three pairs of antique figures surrounding a mirror with cut sides. It has two entries: "concours crozatier" and "plus ultra" (charles v's motto meaning "beyond the limits of the feasible"). In the upper part, the battle scene takes up a cartridge shield made by the goldsmith eliseus libaerts preserved today at skokloster castle in sweden. The back of the hand face is covered with a brass plate. Some traces of scratches on the mirror. Size: Height: 30.5 cm. Width: 9 cm.
