19th century chiseled bronze hand face

A bronze face-to-hand mirror, known as the Charles V hand mirror, is made of chiseled bronze. It was created for the Crozatier competition in the second half of the 19th century. Charles Crozatier (1795-1855) was a sculptor, founder, and chaser who established a prize in his name to promote his craft through a competition. The winner was awarded a scholarship to further their training. This Renaissance-style face-to-hand mirror is decorated with three pairs of antique-style figures surrounding a canted mirror. It has two inscriptions: "Crozatier competition" and "Plus Ultra" (Charles V's motto, meaning "Exceed the limits of what is feasible"). In the upper part, the battle scene is based on a cartouche-shaped shield made by the goldsmith Eliseus Libaerts, now preserved at Skokloster Castle in Sweden. The back of the face-to-hand mirror is covered with a brass plaque. Some traces of scratches on the mirror. Dimensions: Height: 30.5 cm. Width: 9 cm.
