Beautiful and rare english cylinder curtain desk on casters from the victorian period. Circa 1880. It is made of mahogany wood and varnished flamed mahogany veneer, stamped by the famous cabinetmaker and furniture manufacturer "holland and sons" on the drawers. In the 19th century, queen victoria ordered many holland and sons pieces of furniture for the royal residences of balmoral, sandringham, windsor and osborne house, the company was renowned worldwide for having won many international competitions. The top of the writing part is in gold braided leather and the shelf pulls out horizontally. Numerous storage compartments inside it. The desk can be easily disassembled/reassembled for transport, it is in 4 parts by interlocking (the 2 drawer units, the cylinder/writing part and the top shelf of the piece of furniture). There is a nice story to this desk that we can trace: there is a white plaque visible in one of the drawers mentioning davis and sons in tottenham court road london, this plaque means that the piece of furniture was resold by this high end furniture company in a very well known antiques street around 1920. Subsequently the piece of furniture ended up in the navy and passed through 2 times in 1956 (label under the top shelf). The desk includes 3 keys: 2 for the drawers of the pedestals and 1 other to lock the curtain cylinder. Very good condition.
