Clam box, design Alan Fletcher, circa 1968, Mebel edition

Designed by British designer and art director Alan Fletcher in the late 1960s, the Clam Box is a graphic and playful storage box, produced by Mebel in Italy. Inspired by the shape of Edam cheese, it consists of two identical molded plastic shells, which are assembled by an ingenious system of notched teeth. Produced by Mebel in Italy, it comes in a bold color palette of red, blue, yellow, black, and white, characteristic of the pop aesthetic of the time. Ideal as a trinket tray, jewelry box, or small desk organizer, this piece illustrates how graphic design can infuse everyday objects. Each box is signed: "Mebel, Italy, des. A. Fletcher."
