Art Nouveau vase, Austria, 19th century

A vase from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries representing early Art Nouveau, made in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is made of a combination of iridescent, milky white glass formed into a flared, sculptural collar and a tall, slender neck of clearly faceted, clear glass with subtle iridescence. The whole is topped with a base of patinated copper or bronze with a soft profile and a satin-matte, golden-brown shade. The visible, hand-made connection of glass and metal emphasizes the artisanal nature of the object. The composition highlights verticality, lightness, and organic dynamism – the flowing line and decorative, wavy edge evoke floral motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau. The vase is in very good condition, with natural patina on the metal and minimal, superficial signs of age, with no visible damage to the glass. The form of the vase 'tells' of times when nature became an artistic inspiration: the vibrancy of the late 19th century is expressed here in the organic modeling of the glass and soft, flowing shapes reminiscent of a flower opening to the light. The glass surface gently reflects the surroundings, iridescing and changing tone depending on the angle; the edge seems to ripple like a soft iris petal. The patinated finish of the base shows the noble aging of the metal – as if the vase has preserved echoes of past evenings in a Viennese salon or palace orangery. This type of Art Nouveau glass fits well in representative interiors: it can be displayed on a low walnut or rosewood console, or against a deep, muted wall color to emphasize the iridescence of the glass and the sculpted, gentle line of the edges. In arrangement, it is worth combining it with period items – a brass mirror, a ceramic platter with a decorative rim, or a lampshade with colored glass. The vase can be complemented with a single orchid branch or grasses, although left empty, it alone creates the atmosphere of a historical interior with a touch of museum elegance.
