Gustave bourgogne. Painting on paper with the theme of Faust. French painter born in 1888 in Veigné in Indre et Loire and died in Paris in 1968. He excelled in landscapes, still lifes and portraits and made a specialty of the abstract interpretation of great musical compositions. In 1928, hearing the grand carillon of the cathedral of Malines, he had the revelation of the correspondence of sounds and colors and began to reproduce in his paintings the impressions felt when listening to music, considering that painting is like music, the result of the same deep rhythm. In the company of Henri Valensi, Charles Blanc-Gatti and Vito Stracquadaini, Gustave bourgogne published in 1932 the manifesto of musicalism and created with them the association of musicalist artists. He exhibited his works at the first three salons of musicalist artists. Their common goal is not to translate music into painting but rather to reveal its psychic echoes in the visual domain. According to their theories, the canvas is like a vertical score where the artist superimposes the different sensory aspects of the same vision, integrating rhythm, dynamism, symbolization... Music reflects, according to them, the scientific dynamism of the 20th century. Gustave Bourgogne exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants until 1963.
