Underwood is an old American brand of typewriter. The most modern machine at that time, imagined by the mechanic F.X. Wagner, who sold his patent to Underwood in 1895. This conventional machine, double switch, is truly the first to write fully visible. By 1900, the manufacturer proposed 6 different lengths of cart. The No. 5 print 84 characters. It is produced continuously from 1901 and with a few minor changes, until 1931. This machine is one of the first portable. UNDERWOOD produced more or less sophisticated models (accounting machine, electric machine, machine to print labels, portable machines...) in 1961 where she was bought by the Olivetti brand.
