Air afrique was a pan-african airline created in 1961 by several french-speaking african countries. It operated international flights to europe, north america and south america, as well as domestic flights to the african continent. The company was considered one of the leading african airlines of its time and had its main base in abidjan, ivory coast. Unfortunately, the company ran into financial difficulties in the 1980s and was liquidated in 2002. During the 70s, air afrique mainly used boeing-type aircraft for its international flights. Among these aircraft were the boeing 707 and boeing 747, two iconic models of the time that were particularly valued for their ability to travel long distances. For its domestic and regional flights, the airline mainly used fokker aircraft, such as the fokker f27 and fokker f28. These aircraft were smaller than boeing, but were still reliable and valued for their maneuverability. Here is a superb map of the 70s of air afrique, with its dimensions of 50 by 62 cm. The artists used colors, flora and fauna to showcase africa's rich diversity, ranging from the sahara to countries such as congo, ghana and senegal to the rainforests inhabited by iconic animals such as gorillas, lions and elephants. Although this map is primarily intended to be used as an advertising medium, it also offers an overview of the destinations offered by air afrique and the flight routes that lead to them.
