French neoclassical carved wood chandelier – circa 1950
An elegant French chandelier from circa 1950, made of carved wood with a warmly aged gold-coloured finish. The chandelier has five lights and is built around a tall, tapering central stem with dark elongated flutes and finely carved leaf and lotus motifs. Five gracefully curved arms extend from the round central section, each with a decorative candle dish with beaded rim. A carved ornament with a teardrop finial completes the composition at the bottom. The design draws clearly on the French neoclassical and Directoire tradition, but the lighter execution and simplified decoration place it convincingly in the mid-twentieth century. Over the years the gold-painted finish has become softer and more matt; darker accents in the carved areas give the woodwork extra depth. With a diameter of 41 cm, this is a relatively compact model. Particularly suited to a hallway, bedroom, dressing room, small dining room, library or intimate seating area. It pairs beautifully with French antiques, Gustavian furniture, Belgian minimalism, Italian mid-century pieces and contemporary interiors with lime walls, old floors, natural stone, linen and weathered wood. Good vintage condition with signs of use and age consistent with its years. The finish shows local wear, small discolourations, scratches and paint loss; darker patina in the carved areas. Small old holes and irregularities on some arms and parts (visible in the photos). Structurally intact and visually well balanced. The wiring and electrical components should be checked before use and adjusted if necessary by a qualified electrician. Bulbs and shades are not included.
