Japanese tansu from the nihonmatsu region (northern japan). The two drawers are in paulownia (kiri) and the structure in hinoki (japanese cyoires). Very beautiful fittings carved with cranes, symbol of longevity in japan. The inside of the drawer front is still lined with old sheets of rice paper covered with cursive writings in japanese. Meiji period 19th.
