This vintage mid-20th century painting is now in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. This is a charming work in oil, mounted on board from british artist leonard randall. Little is known of the artist, other than he was active on the south coast of england in the mid twentieth century and has work of a marine nature in the bournemouth & poole college collection. The view featured in the painting is a spectacular one, and shows the view from the top of portland, back across the causeway, with chesil beach to the left. Chesil beach is a stark and beautiful natural phenomenon, comprised entirely of a bank of variously sized pebbles, which runs along the jurassic coast for 14 miles, from portland to west bay. It is said to be the finest example of a barrier beach anywhere in the world. The salt-water lagoon between the beach and the shore of the mainland is known as the fleet, as shown in the top left of the painting. The sea water on the other side of the causeway forms part of portland harbour. Nowadays the causeway carries a road that links portland, which would otherwise be a complete island, with the seaside town of weymouth. The sheltered bay area shown here was used extensively for water sports events during the 2012 olympics. This painting depicts the royal naval air station rnas portland (hms osprey) 2 years after it opened.
