Rare brass and copper royal navy desk lamp on marble base from the 1920s. This one is made of solid brass and was mainly used by officers on ships and the like. In the past, ship lighting was often made of brass and copper because it cannot rust and only oxidizes. This banker's lamp is marked on the brass switch box with the maker's name gabriel & co ltd, a brass foundry founded in birmingham in 1884. It carries the royal navy admiralty pattern part number ap 17010. Gabriels specialized in manufacturing fittings for ships, trams, buses and railways and as well as exporting their products to africa, asia and south america. This lamp originally had a bakelite shade, this probably fell in the distant past because bakelite is quite fragile and was later replaced by this red copper shade. What a wonderful match it is! The brass arm of the lamp is adjustable by means of a ball joint. This lamp has ofcourse been cleaned, fully restored where necessary and fitted with a new black grounded fabric cord and grounded plug. A very special desk lamp that you will not easily find a second of! H 40 / w 28 / d 25.
