Beautiful extra large city map of bruges in the 16th century, drawn by marcus gerardus and published by pieter de sloovere, republished and printed on thick paper by albert de visscher in 1971, beautiful map that is now loved by many bruges residents and hangs in many bruges homes, also a very nice object for interior designers. This is the city map as it was also seen in the story of flanders. In 1561, the bruges artist marcus gerards was commissioned by the city council to create a detailed map of bruges. This had to demonstrate how easily accessible the city was by sea. The zwin silted up more and more, making it increasingly difficult for trading ships to reach the city from the north sea, which was a major problem for a trading metropolis like bruges. The city council therefore had a new canal dug out to the sea, the verse vaart, the middle of the three waterways that lead to the city as shown on the map. Gerards' map was used as propaganda to advertise the new canal, attract traders and other visitors by showing how easy it was to sail into the city. Gerards even exaggerated somewhat by imagining the distance between bruges and the sea as much shorter than it actually was. He also drew the channels much wider. Marcus gerards has created a unique masterpiece, a meticulous, three-dimensional representation of all the houses, gates, mills, waterways, streets and squares of the city. The map is unique of its kind and gives a beautiful picture of what bruges looked like in the 16th century. You could even use them today to find your way around the city. This extra large reissue by albert de visscher is in very good vintage condition, it is over 50 years old, light signs of use along the edges, but no major tears, stains or missing parts, check the photos for more details!
