Aslak Chair Mid-Century Early by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko, Finland, 1960s

A first version of the Aslak chair by the Finnish manufacturer Asko, based on a design by Ilmari Tapiovaara from the late 1950s. The chair was reissued by Artek in 2020. It features a functional design with a complex construction. The frame is made up of countless elements, some simply screwed together, partly connected by elaborate wooden joints. This complex construction provides particular stability while largely shaping the form of the chair. The seat and backrest are made of moulded wood. The completely monochrome design in a strong red tone is striking.
