Isamu Noguchi, sculptor of paper light
Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is one of the greatest American sculptors of the 20th century, and his design work bears its trace. Born in Los Angeles to a Japanese father and American mother, he shared his life between New York, Tokyo and stone. For Herman Miller, he designed in 1947 the Noguchi Coffee Table, a glass coffee table on two curved black wood legs, now one of the world icons of modern furniture. For Ozeki, he created from 1951 the Akari lamps: sculptures of washi paper and bamboo, halfway between the traditional Japanese lantern and the contemporary art object.
The Noguchi Coffee Table edited by Herman Miller and the Akari Ozeki lamps remain Isamu Noguchi's most iconic pieces. American-Japanese vintage furniture to find for those wanting an object where sculpture infuses domestic design.
