Niels Gammelgaard, the Danish icon of IKEA
Niels Gammelgaard (born 1944) is one of the most discreet and influential Danish designers in contemporary furniture. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, he co-founded Pelikan Design in the 70s and collaborated with IKEA for more than forty years, signing some of the Swedish giant's most recognisable pieces: Moment shelf, Ted chair, Råskog trolley. A massive democratic body of work, through which millions of interiors have, without knowing it, welcomed a little Danish design.
The Moment shelf and Ted chair, two of the IKEA pieces signed Niels Gammelgaard, have become discreet classics of mass-market Scandinavian furniture. A production to find second-hand for those who love democratic Danish design, far more subtle than it seems.
