Maurice Burke, the British tulip chair of Arkana

Maurice Burke is a British designer of Australian origin whose production for the British manufactory Arkana, in Bath, marked English pop design of the Sixties. Artistic director of Arkana, he designed in 1965 the model 115 tulip chair, a British response to Eero Saarinen's Tulip Chair for Knoll: cast aluminium structure and lacquered plastic shell. More accessible than the Saarinen model, it equipped British living rooms and restaurants for two decades and embodies the Space Age moment on the other side of the Channel.

The model 115 tulip chair Arkana remains Maurice Burke's signature piece. A British vintage seat to find for those wanting an alternative to Saarinen's Tulip, in an English Sixties pop variant.
